Massey University lecturer told Māori students they ‘don’t look māori.’
A lesson on whakapapa (and manners) for Massey lecturer as tauira māori Mikaela Matenga and Caleb Monk address a certain racist remark of not “looking māori” who - get this were representing Te Waka ō Ngā Ākonga Māori, Massey’s Albany campuses MĀORI association. Matenga and Monk go public as they recount the situation and express their whakaaro in the aftermath of it all. Massey University apologizes to Monk and Matenga.

Aue e hika ma! Poor party planning on behalf of Otago’s Arana College as kōrero and whakaaro on the theme come in hot from all corners of Aotearoa. The dress code? Hori. Encouraged to wear your best ‘hori’ attire, the problematic (and racist) term has initiated fair debate. Ara management defend the theme and dress code arguing since it was chosen by tauira māori themselves it is appropriate for them to determine the use of their own language, others mostly view it as Arana College having no cultural sensitivity.
